Ghanaian Funeral

October 1, 2005

Four or five people transported the body.  They next took off the deceased wig, and covered her forehead and hair with a white satin cloth.  After this was done, they nailed the lid of the casket on, and this is when the tears came from the family.  At this time the sheet is removed, and others may come and view the deceased through the window on the top of the casket. It was a very moving, interesting thing to be able to be a part of.  It was different to see the family have to deal with moving the deceased body, the difference in their viewing and then moving to the casket.  I was impressed at how well the body looked, considering it could have been three weeks since the deceased had actually died.  I learned that the older children are in charge of taking care of the body, and the younger are in charge of food and setup for all the guests.  Not all the children were present when the body was transported.
